From the Cockscomb Wildlife Preserve we continued on south, heading for Punta Gorda. It seemed like an easy days drive -- no big obstacles on the map, and none we had heard about. However, fate was with us...
It was clear we weren't going anywhere soon. Every large vehicle (tractor, backhoe, truck...) in the area had already tried to move the beast, and it wasn't budging.
We had just passed a small sign that said something unintelligible, and had one of those little Mayan pyramids on it. So we backed up half a mile, parked George on the side of the road, and went to check it out. Nim Li Punit turned out to be one of the best Mayan sites we had seen, primarily because of its new museum which had some of the best Stellae we have seen.

The grounds at Nim Li Punit are not extensive, but they are none the less fascinating, and in a beautiful setting.

The view from Nim Li Punit was tremendous. Note the Maya Mountains in the distance. On a clear day, you can see the Caribbean in the other direction.
As usual, the local craftspeople had some wares to sell. I bought a nice basket woven of grass.
By the time we were done visiting Nim Li Punit, a creature from outer space had come and removed the obstruction in the road, and we could continue on to Punta Gorda.
