My grand nephew Jack, who lives in Colorado, has grown up enough to spend some time away from home by himself. So this summer he flew up to spend a couple of weeks on some adventures with his Uncle Gary. He arrived in the middle of our hottest summer on record, but we got out despite the heat. We only had two weeks, and then the rest of his family was coming up, so we didn't have much recovery time between things. He seemed to recover fine, but Uncle Gary got run pretty ragged!

The day after he arrived, we climbed part way up a nearby peak, Lake Mountain. I thought it would be a good way to gauge both of our hiking abilities, his as a young person with muscles still developing, and me as an old geezer with muscles rapidly disappearing. It was a real challenge for both of us mainly because of the heat.

We survived the Lake Mountain trial, and then embarked of a three-day backpack exploring some country in the Scapegoat Wilderness where I hadn't ever been. It was still hot, but the country was pretty and we enjoyed it.

Then we finished up with a relaxing four-day float down the Missouri River.

All in all, some great adventures. I hope he will look back on them fondly.
